Dear Postdocs: This is a funding announcement from DOD. The Fiscal Year 2014 (FY14) Defense Appropriations Act provides research funding for the peer reviewed programs managed by the Department of Defense (DOD) office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). This e-mail is to notify the research community of the recently released funding opportunities from the following programs: Autism Research Program (ARP), Gulf War Illness Research Program (GWIRP), Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP), Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP), Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program (PRORP), and Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP). Detailed descriptions of each of the funding opportunities, evaluation criteria, and submission requirements can be found in the respective Program Announcements. Employment Opportunity: Senior Scientist Molecular Biologist/Biosensor Engineer/Chemist

Optofluidics, Inc. has an opening for a senior scientist with a background in molecular biology, biosensors or chemistry. The successful candidate will work within a technical team in order to develop microfluidic point-of-care devices related to blood-borne protein analysis. The initial duties will be on the development of microfluidic ELISAs to detect biomarkers from serum. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
The position is located in at our laboratory facilities in the University City Science Center in Philadelphia, PA and the expected start date is January 2012. Interested candidates should send a copy of their CV with 3 references and a cover letter to [ jobs@optofluidicscorp.com ].

Masters (or 3 years industry experience) or PhD in Engineering, Physical or Biology
–  Ability to legally work in the U.S starting January 2012
–  Prior experience with molecular recognition assays, biosensors, and surface functionalization and fluorescent microscopy

Desired Experience:
–  Handling human or animal tissue samples
–  Microfluidics and microfabrication preferable but not required

Dr. Anita Pepper, a former Penn postdoc in the Department of Genetics, will discuss why nontraditional or alternative careers for Ph.D.s in biomedical science should now be considered anything but nontraditional or alternative.  She will address the often overlooked point that trained scientists acquire skill sets that are required for many jobs outside of academia that can be fulfilling, intellectually challenging and have a broad impact on the world at large.
